About

YOST: Y | Opera | Studies Today is an annual conference at Yale University that brings together scholars and practitioners from across (and beyond) the region to address opera as a fluent and highly contemporary artistic genre. The conference aims to foster conversations between opera and performance scholars, composers, producers, librettists, directors, designers, and performers to investigate opera’s possibilities, challenges, relevance, and potential today, with a particular focus on “indie opera”—new works that expand generic boundaries and offer alternative music-theatrical experiences, often in unconventional spaces. Such works tend to return opera to its experimental, embodied origins while advancing its technicity and topicality in (and for) the digital age. YOST offers a platform for a wide range of perspectives from which to explore and further develop opera and opera studies today.
